Description

Nestled within London’s most creative district, The Curtain hotel in Shoreditch is the perfect location for Marcus Samuelsson’ newest venture. Born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden and living in New York, Marcus Samuelsson’s cultural inspiration for his meals is a fascinating combination, trumped by his love for Harlem. At the tender age of 24, Samuelsson became the executive chef of premier New York restaurant, Aquavit, becoming the youngest chef ever to receive a three-star restaurant review from The New York Times. Recognising his sensational talent, the James Beard Foundation named him Rising Star Chef of the Year, and then later the Best Chef in the whole of NYC. Marcus’ remarkable journey includes cooking for the Barack Obama, when he served as guest chef for the first state dinner of the Barack Obama presidency.

Moving to and falling in love with New York, Marus’ opening of Red Rooster in Harlem was stirred by his passion for food and the spirit of the vibrant neighbourhood. As a committed philanthropist, Marcus’ aim was to have a positive impact on the Harlem community through food, music and a shared space. Now realising his dream of opening a restaurant in London, Marcus has brought the flavours of Harlem to the streets of Shoreditch.

In this ten course tasting dinner, Marcus draws inspiration from his many cultural backgrounds. He sensationally mixes the spices of Ethiopian cooking with this Northern European upbringing, but most of all the comforting tastes of Southern soul food.

With your choice of a glass of fizz or a pint of beer, nibble on some fresh warm cornbread with honey butter and tomato jam. For starters enjoy dishes such as Southern Heritage, a unique collection of burnt strawberries, burrata, pesto and pickled tomatoes. Follow with a shared plate of Brick Lane Fried Fish, consisting of sea bass, sprouting broccoli and lentil coconut curry. For your sweet tooth, finish with a collection of desserts including American-style donuts with salted caramel ice cream. With such delicious comfort food and live soulful music seven days a week, you’ll feel as though you’re sitting right in the heart of Harlem.
