Day One – Glasgow: A port city on the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands, Glasgow is famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's pre-20th-century prosperity thanks to trade and shipbuilding. Today it's a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene. Collecting the car from Glasgow airport, drive the short distance to your centrally located hotel. From here, you’re free to explore the city centre, its beautiful gardens and squares, and great nightlife. Explore must-see sights, such as The People’s Palace and Winter Gardens, The Lighthouse exhibition centre, and some of the world famous breweries. Day Two – Glasgow to Fort William: Leaving Glasgow, drive north to Loch Lomond; spanning nearly 25 miles Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater loch in Scotland with an archipelago of more than 30 islands. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs area of Scotland was awarded National Park status in July 2002 (becoming Scotland’s first National Park) and was voted the sixth greatest natural wonder in Britain. A picturesque spot for a break from driving along Loch Lomond is the Coach House Coffee Shop, a charming, rustic spot with a roaring log fire in the very pretty village of Luss. Continuing north, this stretch of road leads into the famed Scottish Highlands and the wonderful world of Glencoe. Situated just under two hours from central Scotland, Glencoe boasts a great collection of high mountain peaks, ridges, rushing rivers and waterfalls which altogether create a magical and mystical land that offers a unique range of activities and plenty of space to roam free - a haven of windswept, rocky splendour and the dramatic landscape. From here, your route heads west along the coastline to the historic Highland town of Fort William, known as the gateway to Ben Nevis, the U.K.’s highest peak, and Glen Nevis valley, home to Steall Falls. Day Three – Fort William to Edinburgh: Turning east from Fort William, the road leads into central Scotland and through the epic wilderness of the Highlands to Cairngorms National Park, where the road turns south toward Loch Faskally and Pitlochry. A man-made reservoir, Fallasky is lined by the steep wooded hills of Forest Fallasky and is a beautiful spot to stretch the legs as the halfway point between Fort William and Edinburgh. The beautiful neighbouring town of Pitlochry is an ideal spot for lunch. Lying on the banks of the River Tummel, Pitlochry sits in the impressive shadow of its own mountain, Ben-Y-Vrackie; with impressive stone architecture and floral displays, Pitlochry epitomises Highland Scotland. Heading south, drive through the great Scottish towns of Perth and Dunfermline before reaching Scotland’s vibrant, hilly capital, Edinburgh. With its medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings, Edinburgh is a truly European city. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers, as well as Arthur’s Seat, an imposing peak in Holyrood Park, and Calton Hill, topped with the city’s monuments and memorials. On the last night of this Scottish driving break, explore this beautiful city, its wonderful, undulating landscape, and revel in its nightlife before returning the car to Edinburgh airport in the morning, bringing an end to this epic Scottish adventure.
