Description
Avignon, situated on the leafy banks of the Rhône, was once the capital of Christendom. The city’s monuments are still well preserved, including medieval fortresses, 800-year-old stone ramparts and the magnificent UNESCO-protected Palais des Papes. Today, the historic city entices a youthful crowd with inviting boutiques, relaxed cafes and vibrant squares.
From Avignon, enjoy a full day personalised wine tour with a professional guide and wine expert. Taking the scenic drive to the top of the Dentelles de Montmirail, soak up the stunning views, while your guide extends his knowledge of the countryside, and the link between terroir and typicity of the wine in Provence.
The first of the two world-renowned appellations is Gigondas, where the Domaine des Bosquets Winery, with its impressive full-bodied wines, will be explored. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is famous for producing gloriously rich and robust red wines first cultivated by monks over a thousand years ago. Reignited by the popes of Avignon in the 14th century, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is the largest and most important in southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyard and over 80 growers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined.
In the evening, indulge in grandeur at La Mirande, steps from the Popes’ Palace. Home to a cardinal of the 13th century, the hotels’ ambience is heavily influenced by its past with draping tapestries, oak floors, and Carrara-marble throughout. Savour a three-course dinner in the splendour of this renovated mansion.
On the second day, enjoy an unforgettable dining experience at Michelin-starred Entre Vigne et Garrigue. In a Chartreux farmhouse built in 1610, quite literally situated “between vines and shrubs”, you'll savour Serge Chenet’s six-course ‘Menu Inspiration du Moment’; each dish matched with Provençal wines. The dramatic climate of Provence is reflected on a menu that celebrates home-grown flavours, notably lavender, olive and citrus. Enjoy Chenet’s delicious and colourful cuisine in the beautiful garden or quaint chapel and look out over the extending panorama.
