Description

Housed in a brick-walled cellar in the vaults of an old auction house on Chancery Lane, Baranis is inspired by 1960’s St Tropez. Tom Dixon designed the lighting, to complement the golden-green pillars, and vintage French pop art which make up the striking décor but the most eye-catching feature may be the UK’s only indoor, gravel-grounded pentaque pit for playing French boules.

The intimate bar prides itself on its unpretentious and laid-back atmosphere, and serious passion for Provençal and Corsican wines. You will taste five of the region’s red, white, sparkling and sweet wines. With the help of one of Baranis’ knowledgeable staff, choose your five wines from the extensive list of over 75 options.

Baranis shares a kitchen with adjoining restaurant, Cigalon. Owned by natives Gascons Paul Aussignac and Vincent Labeyrie, Cigalon is the sister restaurant of the Michelin-starred Club Gascon. The kitchen is run by Marseillaise Head Chef Julien Carlon and Chef Christophe Gravelot, whose menu features cuisine of the French Riviera, and hearty staples of the coast of Liguria.

To accompany your tasting, you will savour five dishes from the all-day menu of dishes and nibbles from the Cigalon kitchen, such as Provençal cured ham, or pissaladière - a thick dough ‘pizza’ of olives, anchovies, garlic and caramelised onions.

Reviews

  • Baranis Chill Out.(and you'll learn a lot)

Guy who looked after us "Spot-On" very knowledgeable, told us exactly when the bill was closed ie nothing to pay, and disappeared. Not hovering for a tip therefore we gave him one. Food and wine excellent. Enjoyable hour was spent by all.

Wine tasting gem in the City

Really enjoyed our french/corsican wine tasting last night. Impressed with the amount of food that came with the wine - all delicious but some of the spicier dishes overpowered the white wine a little. Had a great time chatting to Frank who gave us lots of info on the wine. Typical city wine bar venue but with added bonus of a"petanque" (boules) court. Music good. Fairly quiet as we went at 5:30pm but nice little alcoves to sit in. Would recommend it to friends.

  • Great experience

We had a lovely time at Baranis. The staff were very attentive, we were given a private space away from the crowd and loud music, as it was a Friday evening. The food was very enjoyable, and there was more than enough for the two of us. And we tried 5 lovely wines, each came with a little lesson from our wine expert, who taught about its origin and flavours.
We had a great evening, and would definitely book again. Thank you!

5* service, exceptional food and delicious wines

Very impressed with the experience at Baranis yesterday evening. We were expecting to have nice wines with some small dishes to accompany.

However the food pairings were really high quality and good sized portions. The service was really impressive and it was interesting hearing the stories of all of the different wines we were served.

Will definitely go back and recommend to friends and family.

  • Lovely casual date idea. Food is filling :)

The staff at Baranis were very welcoming and was a great host. Food was lovely and wine was amazing.

    Absolutely brilliant!

Absolutely brilliant! Our sommelier was so knowledgeable and the food was amazing! Will definitely be returning.

  • A really wonderful experience

A really wonderful experience: Service was attentive without being intrusive, explaining just the right amount about each wine and each food item and then allowing plenty of time for them to be enjoyed before returning with the next. The manager (who was running the tasting) was also generous in the measures of wine (substantially larger than advertised because he felt it "wasn't quite enough to enjoy the wine.") There was also much more food than expected - I had anticipated a small morsel with each glass but we were actually served a wide array of items from the bar snack's menu (all of which were excellent.) I'm not a wine drinker in the slightest (this was the quid pro quo for my partner coming to a previous whiskey tasting) but to my surprise I also thoroughly enjoyed what was served - I can't speak to the quality of the wine relative to other wines but the explanations of the unusual nature of wine from Corsica and Provence kept me intrigued and it was a pleasure to drink. And all of this was fantastic value at the price.

    The wine was really nice

The wine was really nice, service good and pètanque was great. However the food was just average.
