Description

Housed in a brick-walled cellar in the vaults of an old auction house on Chancery Lane, Baranis is inspired by 1960’s St Tropez. Tom Dixon designed the lighting, to complement the golden-green pillars, and vintage French pop art which make up the striking décor but the most eye-catching feature may be the UK’s only indoor, gravel-grounded pentaque pit for playing French boules.

The intimate bar prides itself on its unpretentious and laid-back atmosphere, and serious passion for Provençal and Corsican wines. You will taste five of the region’s red, white, sparkling and sweet wines. With the help of one of Baranis’ knowledgeable staff, choose your five wines from the extensive list of over 75 options.

Baranis shares a kitchen with adjoining restaurant, Cigalon. Owned by natives Gascons Paul Aussignac and Vincent Labeyrie, Cigalon is the sister restaurant of the Michelin-starred Club Gascon. The kitchen is run by Marseillaise Head Chef Julien Carlon and Chef Christophe Gravelot, whose menu features cuisine of the French Riviera, and hearty staples of the coast of Liguria.

To accompany your tasting, you will savour five dishes from the all-day menu of dishes and nibbles from the Cigalon kitchen, such as Provençal cured ham, or pissaladière - a thick dough ‘pizza’ of olives, anchovies, garlic and caramelised onions.

Reviews

  • Lovely food, wine & staff

Venue was lively (will definitely go back). All the staff were professional and courteous. Head Barman Frank went the extra mile and explained about each individual wine and dish and made you feel at ease from the start. More important the Boss (wife) had a great time. Thanks Truly and Baranis.

    Great midweek trea

    Friendly, relaxed. Great wine

  • Good wine, good matching food and good service = a Great evening.

Our Flight of Wines for Two at Baranis was really great. A double birthday gift from our children which we really enjoyed. We were happy to have a booth ( less noisy for us old folk !) The somellier/wine waiter was pleasant. Good wine, good matching food - Great evening ! We even recommended it to some friends while we were there.

Lovely experience at Baranis Chancery lane

We arrived early, but were welcomed to our table. And our host was very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.

  • Great time!

An intimate evening with lots to learn about wine and in an unusual london setting. The host was extremely friendly, well-informed, and we had a great time.

Excellent quality wine and food (tapas) tasting experience

Hosts were very attentive and informative.

  • Pleasant evening

We were waited on by Frank from Albania. Can't speak highly enough of him.

    Great experience!

    Very helpful and friendly service.

  • Fab time and wonderful host

Great place, Frank was a fab host. Food and wine was very French and very nice.

    Great Experience - Highly Recommended

Wine tasting was great. Really informative and the food was excellent.

  • Don't miss a taste of Southern France in London

We arrived early which was no problem to the staff and when our wines and food arrived our host explained the attributes of each wine and why it would partner the food. We loved the food and the wines were great. The people who looked after us were excellent and although we hadn't heard of Baranis before we would certainly go back if in the area. It was a Christmas present from family who didn't know what to buy and they couldn't have chosen better. EXCELLENT

    Chilled Wine Tasting

A lovely chilled evening trying different wines with some nibbles along side. It was very hands off but wasn't a bad thing. The place was a little cold and dimly lit, loud music towards the end so was hard to hear each other. Maybe a location slightly away from the bar would help this?

  • A truly memorable experience

Very friendly and attentive staff. Excellent wine. Food could have been a little better.

    Romantic date night

Vey nice staff. Servings were a bit on the small side but overall had a fun time.

  • Superb

Service fantastic, wine and pairing dishes were superb and would recommend to others

    Enjoyable Experience

    Very enjoyable

  • Great!

Great knowledge from the staff and they catered brilliantly to my allergy. The location itself was wonderful and the team at Truly Experiences were quick to respond and helpful throughout the booking process. Thank you!

  • Cheese

    Great service and amazing cheese

    Great gift idea

Lovely cocktails and wines with finger food. We both loved it!

  • Fab!

Great food & wine with an excellent host!

    Excellent evening in lovely setting

Excellent service throughout the evening with a fun and knowledgeable sommelier who was in no way a 'wine snob'.... very refreshing!

  • Great experience - would recommend

Waiter / win expert was fantastic, very friendly and knowledgeable

Fab wine, fab food, fab venue!

The wine and food were fantastic! Our waiter was also very knowledgeable and attentive. Would definitely recommend to friends!

  • A must!

It was absolutely fantastic. The young French attendant was terrific and made the experience with his knowledge and kindness. The food and wines were exceptional. Great value for money!

    stunning

it was so much better than I thought it would be! Great food, amazing wine and the staff were just so friendly.

  • A highly recommended wine tasting experience!

I took my friend to Baranis for a birthday treat, having never been there before, and we have a great time! The wines were something different and the food was really tasty! The experience is great value for money. The hosts were very attentive too. I would recommend to anyone who wants to have a relaxed wine and food tasting experience!

    Girls Night out !

Great night and well looked after

  • Baranis Chill Out.(and you'll learn a lot)

Guy who looked after us "Spot-On" very knowledgeable, told us exactly when the bill was closed ie nothing to pay, and disappeared. Not hovering for a tip therefore we gave him one. Food and wine excellent. Enjoyable hour was spent by all.

Wine tasting gem in the City

Really enjoyed our french/corsican wine tasting last night. Impressed with the amount of food that came with the wine - all delicious but some of the spicier dishes overpowered the white wine a little. Had a great time chatting to Frank who gave us lots of info on the wine. Typical city wine bar venue but with added bonus of a"petanque" (boules) court. Music good. Fairly quiet as we went at 5:30pm but nice little alcoves to sit in. Would recommend it to friends.

  • Great experience

We had a lovely time at Baranis. The staff were very attentive, we were given a private space away from the crowd and loud music, as it was a Friday evening. The food was very enjoyable, and there was more than enough for the two of us. And we tried 5 lovely wines, each came with a little lesson from our wine expert, who taught about its origin and flavours.
We had a great evening, and would definitely book again. Thank you!

5* service, exceptional food and delicious wines

Very impressed with the experience at Baranis yesterday evening. We were expecting to have nice wines with some small dishes to accompany.

However the food pairings were really high quality and good sized portions. The service was really impressive and it was interesting hearing the stories of all of the different wines we were served.

Will definitely go back and recommend to friends and family.

  • Lovely casual date idea. Food is filling :)

The staff at Baranis were very welcoming and was a great host. Food was lovely and wine was amazing.

    Absolutely brilliant!

Absolutely brilliant! Our sommelier was so knowledgeable and the food was amazing! Will definitely be returning.

  • A really wonderful experience

A really wonderful experience: Service was attentive without being intrusive, explaining just the right amount about each wine and each food item and then allowing plenty of time for them to be enjoyed before returning with the next. The manager (who was running the tasting) was also generous in the measures of wine (substantially larger than advertised because he felt it "wasn't quite enough to enjoy the wine.") There was also much more food than expected - I had anticipated a small morsel with each glass but we were actually served a wide array of items from the bar snack's menu (all of which were excellent.) I'm not a wine drinker in the slightest (this was the quid pro quo for my partner coming to a previous whiskey tasting) but to my surprise I also thoroughly enjoyed what was served - I can't speak to the quality of the wine relative to other wines but the explanations of the unusual nature of wine from Corsica and Provence kept me intrigued and it was a pleasure to drink. And all of this was fantastic value at the price.

    The wine was really nice

The wine was really nice, service good and pètanque was great. However the food was just average.
