Description

At the peak of The Blitz, the government ordered London Transport to use its technical expertise to construct ten deep-level shelters to protect the public against aerial bombardment. Despite a speedy turn-around, by the time they were finished in the summer of 1942, the threat of The Blitz was over. However, the shelters still proved useful with many Londoners found homeless after their houses being bombed in the war. In 1944 they become crucial again, sheltering civilians from the terrifying air raids.

The London Transport Museum is offering a limited number of tours in their Hidden London series, giving people an exclusive peek into areas of the underground network that are normally shut off to the public. Discover the secret world beneath London in a fascinating tour and get an intimate peek into one of the capital’s most intriguing hidden spaces.

Discover the buried hidden city and hear how beds were assigned, dorms allocated and how people kept morale high. Since the war, the Clapham South shelters have housed homeless Londoners, hopeful Caribbean migrants arriving on Empire Windrush and even served as budget accommodation for thrifty visitors to the Festival of Britain in 1951.

Enjoy an intriguing tour of a half-forgotten subterranean relic of the Second World War.
