Description

Rediscover your adventurous side on this Ireland activity break at Ballyfin, branded "certainly Ireland's grandest hotel" and listed amongst the "100 Best Hotels and Resorts" by International Traveller Magazine.

Built in 1822 as the home of British baronet Sir Charles Coot, Ballyfin has long been admired as the most lavish Regency mansion in Ireland. In May 2011, following an eight-year restoration, Ballyfin re-opened as a 5-star hotel, reclaiming its position as Ireland's most opulent country estate.

The estate is fabled for its natural and man-made beauties, with the hotel sat as its centrepiece. Stone walls enclose 600 acres of parkland, a lake and ancient woods, delightful garden buildings, follies and grottoes. The grounds are filled with features to delight the outdoor enthusiast, including a medieval-style tower, built as a folly in the 1860's, an abundance wildlife to be seen on early morning walks, and a nearly-restored Edwardian rock garden.

The hotel itself contains only 15 rooms, providing discretion and privacy like few other destinations. Your will stay in one of Ballyfin's Junior Suites, such as the Lady Caroline Coote Room or The Bulter Room. Whilst each room has its own individual characteristics, all are spacious, elegantly decorated and luxuriously appointed to the highest standards.

With an enviable location at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, Ballyfin offer a diverse range of outdoor activities, for the lover of nature or adventure-seeker alike. During your stay, you can select any number of activities to enjoy, including horse back riding, falconry and more. If desired, we can also arrange a guide to tailor a walk amongst the mountains themselves, which provide a challenge to every grade of walker.

Fishing on the estate's lake is also a popular choice of activity on this Ireland activity break. If desired we will arrange a gillie and a lesson, for a morning or afternoon of fishing for pike and roach. Upon your return back to the hotel in the evening, there are also indoor activities to enjoy, including an evening of wine or whisky tasting, or a guided tour of Ballyfin's extensive collection of Irish art, china and antiques from around the world.

A gourmet dinner in the State dining room is included on both evenings, preceded by pre-dinner drinks in the library. Winner of Hotel Restaurant of the Year 2013 at Andrew Harper's Grand Awards, Ballyfin source all their ingredients according to the mantra: 'local, natural and seasonal'. The beef is Irish Black Dexter from Co. Offaly, the lamb is from the Comeragh Mountains and the Connemara Hills, and the fish comes from Castletownbere, where the freshest seafood is handpicked from local boats.

Breakfast is also included on both days, with a choice of lunch or afternoon tea on both afternoons. Afternoon tea can be enjoyed in a variety of locations; in the romantic conservatory, the candlelit cellar, or as a hideaway picnic. As well as all meals your stay also comes inclusive of tea, coffee and homemade cookies, a pressing and laundry service, Wi-Fi, and use of most on-site recreational facilities. This includes the hotel's extensive leisure facilities, ranging from a 14m heated indoor pool overlooking the courtyard garden, to a fully equipped gymnasium, so you can fully enjoy this Ireland activity break.

Reviews

  • Refined and Understated Mansion Hotel

Having really travelled to thirty years' worth of the finest hotels throughout Europe (including the UK and Ireland, I have found a place on earth that surpasses any experience I have enjoyed anywhere. Ever. This is a refined, classic, understated but supremely opulent manor house set in spectacular landscaping with lake, pleasure gardens, follies, cascade from a temple, a medieval-style tower and a glass conservatory.

I had been anticipating a fantastic experience based upon the reviews and Ballyfin's own exquisite website. I knew we would be surrounded by spectacular scenery and lush, elegant rooms throughout the manor house. We knew our bedrooms would be perfect.
And then we arrived....there is no way to have anticipated that Ballyfin is so superb as to make it almost unearthly...

The entire experience was astonishing not only because of the unsurpassed physical beauty but by the kindness and efficiency of the staff. If I were rating Ballyfin on a scale where flawless in every way was 100%, that is the grade I'd assign to the experience. Not even one point off for anything at all.

    Unique Experience in Ireland

It was not like staying in a hotel at all. Rather it was like staying in the private house of an intimate friend with exquisite taste. The staff are like the staff of a private house as they are clearly and justifiably proud of their venue and very loyal too. This is just about the perfect place to go and have an exquisite time doing very very little except take in the wonderful house, grounds and views. No report would be complete without a nod to the superbly presented and sumptuous food which comes with an ingenious wine list.

But finally I would like to present the star of the show...the interior decor is proof that time does stand still in some magical places. They will have to force me to leave as I think I have found a portal to heaven.

Get here by carriage, horse or foot but don't deprive yourself any longer...

  • Professional Staff

The staff are universally excellent and have a relaxed professionalism which perfectly complements the experience
Dining is sublime with a magical mix of the best Ireland has to offer twinned with a very reasonably priced wine list which features some truly amazing bargains, simply excellent
You simply need to visit this remarkable offer to experience what is undoubtedly the best overall experience we have ever encountered
