Whisky is purchased both ‘en primeur’ (before it has been aged) and ‘ready-to-drink’ casks. The former being somewhat of a gamble as they claim that 50% of these casks turn out not to have produced whisky suitable for single-cask bottling. That which is bottled is not pasteurised, nor is there any caramel or colouring added. What you get is 100% pure unadulterated and cask-strength whisky.

During your masterclass at The Bar at the Athenaeum, you’ll be guided through four different flavour profiles from whiskies across the globe. Understanding how each is produced and distributed, you’ll then sample a 25ml dram of each. To complement the whisky, premium cheeses are included throughout the tasting, highlighting the complex characteristics of each.

Perfectly paired are Nikka Black Malt and Double Gloucester Cheese; Redbreast Lusteau Edition and Wigmore Cheese; Willet’s Bourbon and Lancashire Bomb; and Dalmore Cigar Malt and Beenleigh Blue Cheese. Discerning your favourites, you’ll then have the opportunity to relax in the intimate ambience of the bar, asking the expert mixologist any questions you may have.
