Why we love it

If you’ve always fancied the idea of becoming a pilot, flying a helicopter is arguably one of the best jobs in the world. Firing up the engines, climbing to high altitudes and gazing down on exceptional views is just the start. Over a four-hour discovery experience, you’ll get a real taste of what life could be like in this exhilarating career.

What's Included?

  • Discover what it’s like to be a helicopter pilot in a four-hour flight experience for one in a Robinson R22 with Phoenix Helicopters in either Surrey or Hampshire
  • Get to grips with all aspects of helicopter flight in an intensive two-hour briefing followed by two hours of flight time
  • Take the controls and fly the helicopter yourself during your flight, as you start your journey towards your PPL(H) training
  • Log your flying time in your log book with your instructor which will contribute towards your PPL(H)
  • Receive a certificate of achievement at the end of your flight

Description

The R22 discovery experience provides the perfect opportunity to pilot a helicopter. With multiple controls to work with, the flight typically starts with upper air exercises, before focusing on low level manoeuvres such as the hover. Operation of the helicopter happens through multiple controls which you will be shown how to operate, enabling you to fly the aircraft.

If you are seriously considering piloting as a career, or would like to train to become a helicopter pilot for personal reasons, this is the experience for you. Over four hours, you will receive an intensive ground school briefing for two hours, before taking to the sky for a further two hours of flight time in a Robinson R22. You are able to split the session over two different days, should you wish, or alternatively choose a morning or afternoon that suits you.

After a comprehensive briefing, including safety checks, ground and airborne emergency drills and aircraft information, you’ll then be shown how to operate the multiple controls of the helicopter. As a co-pilot, you’ll be responsible for knowing and communicating who has control, as well as the location of other aircraft in the sky. As a pilot, you will take over the controls and fly the helicopter through the air, truly getting a feel of what it means to manoeuvre an airborne machine.

Once back on the ground, you’ll receive a certificate of achievement and post-flight debrief followed by the chance to ask any further questions about your experience. You’ll also have the opportunity to log your two hours of flying time in your log book with your instructor which will contribute towards your PPL(H).
