Description

Enjoy the otherworldly delights of New Zealand's North Island, with this spectacular driving tour by Porsche 911 Carrera S from the vibrant city of Auckland. With luxury hotel stays, drive through landscape dotted with volcanic cones, shooting geysers, plunging waterfalls, vast caves, towering mountains and lush valleys on this New Zealand driving break.

The stunning scenery of New Zealand's North Island is incomparable anywhere else in the world. The ethereal delights of the country have most recently been showcased in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. On this New Zealand driving tour, you will be able to take in the magnificent sights of fictional Hobbiton. Take to the smooth and speedy highways in your Porsche 911 to enjoy the spectacular landscape of the island.

Itinerary

Days One and Two

Arrive in Auckland and check in to your luxury hotel, in the heart of the city. Set across volcanic ridges, Auckland provides a fusion of urban delights and dramatic coastal scenery for the first part of this New Zealand driving break.

While in the city, make sure to visit the Auckland Volcanic Field to discover more about the array of 50 volcanoes the city was built upon. With some of these volcanoes still active, the city sits on a sea of bubbling lava that stirs 100km below. The tranquil Hauraki Gulf Islands are also well worth a visit, laden with gorgeous golden beaches, an alluring viniculture scene, adventurous watersports and prime opportunities for dolphin spotting.

Day Three

The driving adventure will begin with delivery of the incredible Porsche 911 to your hotel door. Head south from the cityscape of Auckland, through the lush, green Bombay Hills. You will traverse attractive farmland as you make your way to Matamata.

It is not difficult to determine why Peter Jackson, a New Zealander himself, chose this as the scene of The Shire in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Stop to take a look around the Hobbiton movie set, which brings the acclaimed trilogies to life.

Continuing on the journey, enjoy the plantation pine forest of Fitzgerald Glade, before coming across Tirau, know for its charming antique shops and animal shaped iron buildings. Enjoy the refreshing air at Fitzgerald Glade, before heading into the volcanic terrain of Mamaku District. Here, mini volcanic cones are dotted across the landscape towards Mount Ngongataha, a popular destination for luge riders.

You will arrive at the town of Rotorua - your home for the night. The town lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, with inviting geothermal areas and the giant Lake Rotorua. Rotorua offers the opportunity to discover the culture of the Maori people: it was settled more than 600 years ago by the Te Arawa, who made home by lakeside geothermal areas. While there, explore the boiling mud pools, shooting geysers and an authentic pre-European village.

Day Four

Today, you will make the 80km journey to Taupo. The unusual volcanic scenery on the road from Rotorua will enthrall, while you will also pass through thick sections of pine forest. Take a turn off before reaching Taupo, to one of the local geothermal parks. You may also wish to take a look at the Huka Falls, where the phenomenal power of nature is embodied by the 220,000 litres of water that crash down every second.

Taupo sits on the edge of the largest lake in New Zealand and, indeed, the entire southern hemisphere. Well stocked with large trouts, you may come across fishermen trying to catch the fish as they swim down one of the streams that flow into the lake. The lake offers many inviting picnic spots, while a boat or kayak trip will take you out to Mine Bay, the scene of original Maori carvings.

Day Five

Heading west from Taupo, you'll make your way through more expansive countryside, through a mixture of farmland, lakeland and forest. You may wish to stop by Lake Whakamaru, while the gorgeous Pureora Forest Park hosts a number of rare bird species and pleasant walking trails.

Continuing the journey, you will come to the Waitomo Caves district, famous for its subterranean splendour. The network of vast caves are undoubtedly magnificent, decorated with jutting stalagmites and stalactites and the unique highlight: thousands of twinkling glow worms appear to radiate their dazzling luminescent lights. It is well worth taking a boat trip through the caves to enjoy this spectacle.

From the Waitomo Caves, you will continue north. You will head through beautiful Waikato farmland towards Hamilton. Stop at Otorohanga to see the Kiwi House - a chance to come eye-to-eye with the New Zealand national symbol. You will come into contact with the powerful Waikato River again, following it north. As you approach Auckland, you will pass through the wine-growing area of Te Kauwhata and the 48 extinct volcanic cones that dot the nearby landscape will come into view.

Days Six and Seven

Back in Auckland, you will have the opportunity to enjoy this vibrant city and relax after the spectacular driving tour. The Auckland Museum, a striking neo-classical building topped with an impressive glass and copper dome, added in 2007, offers a compelling variety of Maori and Pacific Island artefacts, volcano displays and ANZAC commemorations. Auckland is also home to an array of watersports. The wild surf at Piha Beach is one of the best spots for seasoned surfers, while the Waitemata Harbour is the place to go sailing.
