Description

Of all the roads in Germany, few rival the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road). Named 'Romantic' for its pastoral and imagination-inspiring qualities, the route runs from the River Main to the Alps, passing through quaint Bavarian villages, pillowy landscape, arched gateways with guard towers, half-timbered fachwerk houses, Gothic cathedrals and Baroque palaces.

Bavaria's jewel in the crown is Neuschwanstein Castle. Built in 1886 by 'Mad' King Ludwig II, who died just months before the castles completion, the towering structure rises out of the jagged cliff-edge high above Hohenschwangau valley. The fairytale castle has such beauty, that it inspired Walt Disney to create his Magic Kingdom, an image that has captured the imaginations of children for generations.

Day One - Frankfurt

Upon arrival at Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport, you'll receive the keys to your luxury 'automobil' before enjoying all that Frankfurt has to offer. Frankfurt is more than just Germany's financial centre. From the vibrant nightlife on the South Bank to Goethe's House Museum, the city is full of pleasant and lively surprises. Enjoy sweeping views of Frankfurt's cityscape atop the 650ft Main Tower in the heart of the city, before exploring the local cider house on Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt's historic old-centre, dating back to 11AD. Sample bittersweet, Frankfurt produced 'Apfelwein' (apple wine) and tuck into a Frankfurter Würstchen, the great ancestor to the American 'Hot Dog'.

Day Two - Drive from Frankfurt to Augsburg (327 km)

Departing Frankfurt, you'll get your first taste of the infamous Romantic Road. A short drive away lies Würzburg, home to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Residence Palace. The building is embodies French château architecture, Viennese Baroque and religious Northern Italian artistry and was the former residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops. Würzburg's grandeur attracted many folk and today the region is famed as Germany's second-largest quality wine producer. The city's al fresco cafés and restaurants are ideal for a taste of the regions wines and a spot of lunch.

Back on the road, you'll come to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany's second-oldest town. One of Europe's best preserved Medieval towns, thanks to the Thirty Years War, Rothenburg boasts beautiful buildings, traditional Bavarian market square, towering defensive walls and narrow and mysterious cobbled alleys.

Continuing on the Romantic Road, you'll have the option to stay in either Dinkelsbühl or Füssen, meaning your second day of driving can be shorter or longer respectively. Dinkelsbühl is one of the archetypal towns which give the German Romantic Road its character and like Rothenburg is one of the only remaining medieval walled towns, its towering minster and wooden buildings giving visitors a genuine feel for Germany in the Middle Ages. The ideal stop for those seeking some history and adventure.

Füssen, on the other hand, is located at the end of the Romantic Road. Situated on the banks of Lake Forggensee, the Austrian Alps across the short border provide a stunning backdrop to the historical city. This is the destination of choice for those looking to fully unwind before the short drive to Neuschwanstein Castle and on to Munich.

Day 3 - Dinkelsbühl or Füssen to Neuschwanstein Castle to Munich (213 km)

Two hours from Dinkelsbühl or a mere 15 minutes from Füssen, your final day on this Bavarian adventure leads to the foothills of picturesque Neuschwanstein Castle. Originally built for 'Mad' King Ludwig II, the castle was the artistic inspiration for Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom and embodies the very essence of grandeur, desire, and often delusional, Romance. Savour authentic Bavarian fare in the village of Hohenschwangau below the castle, where you'll be able to purchase entry tickets to the castle if you wish. In regal style, ascend to the castle by horse-drawn carriage through the lush Bavarian forest.

The final leg of your journey leads into the traditional Bavarian capital, Munich. Check-in to your luxury 5-star hotel, don a Lederhosen and head out to the Hofbräuhaus for a 'stein' of German beer to toast to your adventures. At dinner, indulge on the finest in European cuisine or opt for a traditional Bavarian Beerhouse, for authentic schnitzel, sauerkraut, bread dumplings and bratwurst, all washed down with a litre of Munich's finest.

Reviews

  • Excellent Detailed Itinerary

Bought this for my husband as a 40th birthday present and we've told at least 10 friends about it already. This was an amazing trip - the views, the food, the atmosphere. But I think he really just enjoyed driving in the Porsche 911.

The itinerary and maps were detailed and tastefully curated. No complaints there.
