Description

Guatemala is home to some of the best volcanoes in the world, not to mention wonderful landscapes, colourful villages and friendly people. With the highest density of active

volcanoes, this is undoubtedly the best place to explore 'fountain mountains!'

With its colonial heritage, the lively town of Antigua is the perfect place to start the tour. There may be time to explore the Mayan markets, listen and dance to the sounds of Salsa and Merengue and even practice your Spanish. From here, you'll be accompanied by a trained volcanologist, to Pacaya's crater.

Pacaya provides the perfect opportunity to get up close to an active volcano and get an in-depth understanding of the powerful and turbulent natural processes at work. The eruptions here tend to be calmer than the nearby Fuego, allowing you to toast marshmallows on volcanic rock.

Venture on to Acatenango for a two-night stay. This may be Guatemala’s best known hike, thanks to its inspired views over Guatemala’s long chain of volcanoes and the lava flowing Fuego next door. It’s also one of the more challenging climbs, through fields, forest and volcanic ash, but is well worth it.

Fuego is the real star of the show. Weather permitting, you’ll be treated to a stunning series of eruptions from base camp. It's roar is loud enough to wake even the deepest sleeper - very important given the views of red lava oozing at night, is a sight to behold.
