Why we love it

Siberian Huskies are a natural and ancient breed of sled dog, developed by the Chukchi Indians of Eastern Siberia over many centuries of co-dependence. These highly social, friendly and intelligent dogs earned their keep by pulling the Chukchis’ sleds across inhospitable hunting grounds, where speed, stamina and hardiness were crucial for survival. Discover more about these majestic animals and feel their sheer power as you learn to run your own team of dogs in an unforgettable mushing experience at Huskyhaven.

Description

Located 15 miles south of Aberdeen on the outskirts of Stonehaven, Huskyhaven is the home of Iditarod musher Wattie McDonold and his team of Siberian huskies. Wattie who has been dubbed The Kilted Musher, has travelled to Alaska regularly since 2008 and has taken part in the gruelling Iditarod race twice. The race covers 1,049 miles of frozen terrain in temperatures of around -55 degrees celsius and takes around two weeks to complete.

Hattie opened Huskyhaven in 2016 and brings the magic of Alaska to the north-east by opening the area’s first husky racing visitor centre and museum that houses items and equipment from his Alaskan racing trips. The wooden centre has an authentic Alaskan feel complete with a wood burning stove and memorabilia.

Embark on an adventure of a lifetime and experience first hand the adrenalin rush of husky sledding. This hands-on experience is perfect for those who want to fully understand the sport of mushing. Seeing these incredible dogs working in harness is the best way to learn about the breed, giving insights into their working attitude, drive and focus, as you prepare and run your own team of dogs.

Over roughly four hours, guests will help to harness their own team of dogs before preparing for mushing up the trail. This is a demanding trail which does require a certain level of fitness, but an incredible experience to witness the dogs in action and feel their sheer power. On return to base, guests will help unharness their team before retiring to the cosy cabin to warm up and relax with an audiovisual presentation and museum tour. Refreshments and snacks will be provided to replenish energy levels. Discover the history of Huskyhaven, learn more about Siberian huskies, and hear Watties incredible Alaskan stories.

Run with the dogs and enjoy an experience of a lifetime at Huskyhaven.
