Historians, philosophers and foodies alike have a historic love for the iconic city of Athens. Home to some of the world's most important archaeological sites, the Greek capital has an international reputation as the home of democracy; and now Athens is re-emerging as a gastronomic destination for far more contemporary fare.

Housed in a neoclassical building in the Pangrati neighborhood, Spondi falls under the highly creative gastronomy category. The restaurant was awarded its first Michelin star in 2002, before earning a second six years later.

Created by Apostolos Trastelis in 1996, Spondi Restaurant is now a point of reference in the Greece and a member of the prestigious “Les Grandes Tables du Monde”. The food is prepared with the freshest of products and the creative imagination of the chef. He treads skillfully between creativity and tradition, modernity and classicism. He delights the eye with artful presentation and the mouth with exquisite flavors touched by a hint of exoticism.

For those visiting the restaurant there could be some tough choices to make: The main courses include a platter of milk-fed lamb in a herb cocotte with lemon paste and eggplant-coriander polenta, as well as veal sweetbread with aromas of “Haiti Komet” Arabica coffee, Jerusalem artichoke and liquorice. Meanwhile, a selection of tapas offers another insight into Spondi’s table culture, while the four-course Initiation Menu provides diners with definitive proof as to why the Pangrati restaurant is considered one of the world’s finest.

Guests can then enjoy even more Greek gastronomic genius on the second evening at Michelin-starred, Hytra. In the warmer months, the restaurant offers outdoor seating with panoramic views of the Acropolis, Lycabaceum Hill and the city skyline.

Hytra has developed its culinary character based on the redefinition of Greek cuisine. The restaurant has retained its Michelin star under the care of Chef Tassos Mantis, whose dishes are crafted and presented in contemporary fashion. The highly technical recipes are offered in a tasting menu paired with wine. Guests can look forward to exotic dishes of quail, chestnut and fresh truffle finished with xinotyri- a local Naxos Island cheese.

Between Michelin-starred extravaganzas, refresh your appetite by setting off to relive the classical past with a visit to the Acropolis Museum. The museum was built to house artefacts from the Greek Bronze Age, Roman and Byzantine Greece.
