MORE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

Originally built as a fortress and royal residence by William the Conqueror in 1066, it wasn’t long before the tower took on a number of other – more surprising – roles. In 1204, it became a menagerie for wild beasts acquired by King John and later that century, the location of the mint. However, it is the Tower of London’s history as a prison that has always held the most fascination.

Most notoriously, the rightful heir to the throne of Edward IV, his 12-year old son, was locked in the tower by his power-hungry uncle – never to be seen again. Centuries later, the tower also jailed Hitler’s right-hand man, Rudolf Hess, who was brought to London in May 1941 after landing unexpectedly in Scotland.

Despite its days of imprisonment coming to an end, the tower remains a living fortress, adapting to its changed circumstances while conserving centuries of tradition. It is home to the world-famous Yeoman Warders, or ‘Beefeaters’, the Crown Jewels, as well as to the ravens – at least half a dozen of which must stay within the bounds of the fortress or, legend has it, the monarchy will fall.

A two-and-a-half guided tour with an expert guide, will take you and your guest on a mysterious journey of this historical wonder. Tracing stories back through the centuries, you'll discover just how influential this building has been to British history as a fortress, palace and prison.
