With over 300sq miles (790sq km) of coastline, natural Atlantic reef and a strong maritime tradition, the Madeiran Islands have no shortage of excellent locations for big game fishing. Up to 200 different species of fish can be taken from the Portuguese waters including 1000lb (450kg) marlin and tuna as well as dorado and shark. These powerful migratory fish provide anglers with lots of action and for this you’ll need a boat to match. The custom built English charter you’ll fish from is designed by Allen Hill and moulded by Mitchell Mouldings in Essex, England. The boat comes fully equipped with fighting chair, riggers, rods and reels, lures and a 5x3 metre cockpit to give you plenty of room to relax in the Madeiran sun. Enjoy seven hours a day fishing, with all instruction, fuel, lunch and beverages included. You’re sure to be in excellent hands during your time at sea, the Madeirans are excellent big game fisherman and have been crowned in glory four times in the Annual Blue Marlin World Cup; winning in 1995, 1996, 1997 and claiming first prize again in 2015 with a 652lb catch. Whilst fishing, you’ll be sure to be greeted by playful Atlantic dolphins and humpback, blue and sei whales that are common in these calm, blue waters. Madeira also offers superb light tackle fishery for the smaller species too, often reeling in red snapper, barracuda, wahoo and sting rays among your prized catches. Fishing is just one of Madeira’s attractions. At the heart of the Atlantic, due west of Casablanca, Madeira’s scenery is unlike any other European destination. The scenery is breathtaking and its dense, primeval and subtropical rainforest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tranquil beaches rise dramatically into rugged peaks and deep gorges descend into the dense forest below. The island is awash with vibrant and unique flora, earning Madeira the nickname ‘the floating garden’. An integral part of Portuguese culture and diet, fishing it vital to Madeira. Cut off from the mainland, the island relies on its home-grown produce and alongside fresh tuna and mahi-mahi, Madeira’s volcanic earth promotes a rich and healthy climate for the cultivation of earthy wines, cherries and bananas. Everything on the island, from fish to fruit, is as fresh, sustainable and local as can be.
