Why we love it

Chef-owner Marco Moreira’s tasting menu is inspired by the restaurant's proximity to Union Square Greenmarket, balancing the freshest meats, rich seafood and produce, with an award-winning wine list.

Description

Since opening in 2000, restaurant power couple Marco Moreira and wife Jo-Ann Makovitzky have made Tocqueville a stand-out destination to experience fine dining and haute cuisine. Sao Paulo born Chef Marco Moreira first arrived in New York in 1982 with a keen interest in the city's eclectic multicultural culinary scene. Endorsing the use of fresh, local produce in his cooking, Chef Marco began his career as a sushi chef, where his ideology blossomed and his talents as a technically gifted and passionate professional won him the honor of creating the sushi program at Dean and Deluca, where he met his now wife and business partner, Jo-Ann Makovitzky.

At Tocqueville, Marco's inventive tasting menu takes its inspiration from traditionally beloved and sensible European dishes, fused with American flair and creativity; rich and tender 60 Second Seared Prime Aged Sirloin is balanced with sweet and fluffy brioche and delicate frisée parsley salad, the Pan Roasted Loch Etive Seatrout is harmonised with aromatic tarragon and indulgent champagne emulsion. Tocqueville’s connection with Union Square Greenmarket ensures that the food is consistently seasonal and fresh.

The wine list, meanwhile, is bursting with European variety. Winning the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2002 and named in America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants by Wine Enthusiast in 2014, the restaurant has an impressive selection. Roger Dagorn is Tocqueville’s sommelier and a legendary figure in New York’s dining scene. His experience and dedication has led to Mr. Dagorn becoming a Master Sommelier, one of only 200 worldwide.
