Description

Once a formidable duchy that was more powerful than France itself, Burgundy’s territory stretched as far north as Holland and as far eastwards as Flanders. The dukes of Burgundy spent a fortune beautifying their capital, Dijon, and the region's charm lies very much in its rich history; as well as, of course, in its winemaking.

A jigsaw of over 1000 wine-growing plots that stretch from Dijon to Santenay, the region makes up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each 'climat' (or plot) has its own name, history, taste, and a place in the hierarchy of ‘cru’; the system by which each appellation’s wines are determined (Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village and Regional). It comes as no surprise, then, that some of the world of wine's most illustrious wines can be found in Burgundy; including Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, Clos de Vougeot, Montrachet, Corton, and Musigny.

Day One: Medieval Burgundy

Enjoy the grandeur of medieval Burgundy on your first day. After a farmer’s lunch at a traditional ‘Ferme Auberge’, take in the beauty of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay, wander through the streets of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain - named one of the most beautiful villages in France – and explore the refurbished stately rooms at the fortified castle of Chateauneuf en Auxois.

Day Two: Cote de Beaune

Explore Beaune in-depth with a privately guided tour of the 15th century Beaune Hospice, understanding its importance in Burgundy's winemaking history, and a local vineyard and winery tour accompanied by lunch and a tasting. In the afternoon, soak up stunning views of the Hautes Cotes de Beaune before finishing the dat at a family-run wine cellar.

Day Three: Dijon

Spend the third day of your tour in Burgundy’s capital, Dijon. Relax, enjoy lunch at the market or visit the highly recommended Museum of Fine Arts. Finish up at Maison Veuve Ambal, tasting Burgundy's Champagne counter-point; Cremant.

Day Four: Côte de Nuits

Enjoy two wine tastings in the Côte de Nuits, with views of the scenic vineyards of Romanée-Conti along the Routes des Grand Crus and the Burgundian Champs d’Elysee. Your tasting will be held in a private cellar, and you'll see medieval wine presses of the 12th century at Cistercian Château du Clos Vougeot.

Day Five: Morvan

Drive deep into the Le Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan to find Château Bazoches - a privately-owned 12th century château – and the ancient Basilica of Vezelay, famous throughout history as the starting point for the Crusades.
