Description

A teacher at Sotheby’s Institute, a frequent contributor to Flash Art magazine, and co-presenter of The Art Channel, Joshua White always has the inside track on London’s art scene. Insightful, deeply knowledgeable and experienced, Joshua’s experiences offer a great opportunity to learn from a true insider of the art world. Joshua offers a choice three experiences, each experience is detailed below:

Experience 1: Tate a Tate

London’s Tate Modern and Tate Britain reveal the experiments in art that have shaped our visual culture and are home to the country’s pre-eminent collections of historic and contemporary art. Visiting both museums via a boat ride along the Thames is a chance to see how ideas and artistic processes flow through time. By selecting works shown in the galleries’ permanent collections, Joshua will chart the evolution of different art movements and media. He’ll give his insight into the connections between diverse styles, from self-expressive painting to conceptual works inspired by mathematics.

Experience 2: Get the picture?

Contemporary art has never been more popular, even though it's a field that many people find difficult to navigate. By tracing a path from where artists begin their careers to the capital’s most influential commercial galleries, Joshua can offer interpretations of the most interesting work currently on view. If you're left nonplussed by a lot of contemporary art, this is the perfect opportunity to let Joshua break down the barriers, demystify it and learn more about this exciting field of art.

Experience 3: First Impressions

After assembling one of the world’s ground-breaking collections of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Samuel Courtauld left his paintings to students of art history. Now forming the heart of a gallery at the Courtauld Institute, these works reveal how a personal passion became a major museum at Somerset House and a core group of works at the National Gallery. On this tour with Joshua, discover what drove one man to put together a ground-breaking art collection and how one man’s education in art and developing personal taste led him to change Britain's attitude to modern French painting.
