Why we love it

Not your typical spa experience, Banya No.1 is the first of its kind in London and brings one of Russia’s oldest and most popular traditions to the capital. Experience an unusual and authentic 'parenie treatment' (venik massage) in the sauna-like bath-house – an invigorating thermal treatment in which the body is gently thrashed with fragrant bunches of oak, birch and eucalyptus leaves – before plunging into icy waters to detoxify, promote circulation and relieve muscle tension.

What's Included?

  • Three-hour authentic Russian spa experience at Banya No.1
  • Use of the Russian banya (bath house), hamam (hot stone room) and Lounge Bar
  • Invigorating ten-minute parenie treatment; where the body is gently thrashed with fragrant bunches of leaves
  • Follow your treatment with use of the adrenaline-releasing icy plunge pool
  • Priced for one person; extra guests can be added above

Exclusive to TRULY

  • A complimentary pot of herbal tea served in the Lounge Bar after your treatment

Description

Russians affectionately refer to the banya as their ‘first doctor’ (vodka being the second, raw garlic the third); whilst the ‘venik’ – a leafy, fragrant bundle of birch, oak and eucalyptus – is known as the ‘Tsar of the banya’. This tradition has been part of Russian culture for several centuries and is considered a highly spiritual, physical and enlightening experience.

Banya No.1, London’s first ever traditional Russian bath house, offers both loyal believers and curious first-timers the full Russian experience in this sophisticated venue in Hoxton. The traditional Russian banya is much more than a sauna. The banya cabin is kept at a steady 65-70°C. By pouring water onto hot stones, the humidity can reach 65-70%, compared with 5-10% in a sauna. This super-heated steam produces tiny droplets of hydrating vapour that’s easy to breathe – making it healthier than the dry and harsh air a sauna produces. This enhances detoxification, purification and recovery.

The invigorating thermal parenie treatment takes place with an expert male 'banschik' (bathhouse therapist); some of whom are World Champions in their profession. The banschik briskly and rhythmically smacks the body in massaging strokes with the venik. The fragrant leaves capture the steam in the hot, rising air and bring them back down against the body to relieve muscle tension, stress and boost both blood circulation and the immune system. Thanks to the release of essential oils, such as the minty eucalyptus, the venik also has anti-inflammatory effects and prevents premature ageing of the skin.

The venik massage is followed by a stimulating plunge in icy waters, using either the plunge pool or bucket-tipping showers. At a chilling yet refreshing 7-10°c, the sudden change in temperature brings instant relief from the heat of the banya, releasing adrenaline and serotonin in the body and purifying the skin of everyday toxins.

Between sessions it’s important to relax outside in the resting area. The Lounge Bar is a cosy retreat from the active banya. The comfortable area boasts luxurious booths in dark-green Chesterfield leathers, oak wood furnishings, with privacy screens and service buttons at each table. Here, enjoy a soothing pot of complimentary herbal tea and video feed of the Trans-Siberian railway journey that’s projected against the wall, or, play a game of chess with a fellow banya-goer; it is traditionally, after all, a social experience to be shared.
