Why we love it

Black Rock is an intimate, subterranean whisky den in the City that is “quashing stereotypes in the world of whisky”. The brainchild of the team behind the cocktail nirvana that is the Worship Street Whistling Shop, Black Rock showcases 250 bottles of whisky from around the world and offers a unique service style, where roaming bartenders serve drinks to guests around a 185-year-old oak tree centrepiece – that doubles as a whisky ageing vessel. A must for whisky aficionados and novices alike.

What's Included?

  • Take part in a 90-minute whisky masterclass for up to 20 people at Black Rock

  • Indulge in a tasting of six 35ml drams of premium whiskies - one sample from each flavour cabinet – and one 35ml dram of ‘table whisky’ each
  • Savour a selection of bar snacks, such as Haggis Balls, Soda Bread and Gravadlax, for the table

  • This experience is unique to TRULY guests

Description

Black Rock is on a mission to demystify the world of whisky. Tom Aske and Tristan Stephenson, the duo behind the Victorian cocktail emporium Worship Street Whistling Shop, are pushing the boundaries on whisky drinking while offering a novel, personal approach to service in this cosy and contemporary setting.

Here, there is no traditional bar. Instead, 250 bottles of Scotch, Irish, American, and Japanese grain-spirits from around the world are showcased in six glass cabinets that line one side of the room and are organised into six flavour profiles (round, fragrance, smoke, sweet, spice and fruit) as opposed to region or country of origin. Each whisky is placed by a ‘relative’, allowing imbibers to find a style they like and then try its cousin next to it, making it easy for guests to find a favourite.

The expert bartenders roam around the room to the sound of funk and Nineties hip-hop, or sit at one end of the long wooden table that stretches down the centre of the room.

It's no ordinary table, though, but an 18ft, 185-year-old three tonne hunk of oak tree. Two channels, lined with charred American and toasted European oak, run through the glass-topped table that are filled with 17 litres of Cherry River (an American bourbon with Morello cherry and spices) and a constantly-evolving special house blend, which are both slowly ageing within. Whisky is then poured directly into glasses from a tap at one end - the best sort of log flume.

With private hire of the entire venue for an evening, up to 20 guests will sit around the oak tree centrepiece and enjoy the undivided attention of Black Rock’s whisky experts in a premium whisky masterclass; a fun and accessible experience that caters to all levels of whisky drinkers, be they a novice or connoisseur.

As part of the experience, guests will enjoy a whisky tasting, consisting of a helping of whisky each from the table and six premium whiskies each, one from each flavour cabinet. To soak it all up on the evening, guests will savour delicious and inventive bar snacks to share from Black Rock’s small but well-thought-out menu, such as Haggis Balls with Scotch marmalade, Soda Bread with peat butter and Gravadlax with Inverawe salmon, juniper and dill.
