Description

Joanna Hardy is a gemmologist; an expert in the study of rare gems and precious jewels. Starting her career as a diamond dealer in Antwerp, she has since appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow, worked as a rough diamond valuer for De Beers, and as a valuer at Sotheby's Auction House.

Learn from the master in gems and precious stones with this interactive masterclass at Knightsbridge's Capital Hotel, just next door to Harrods. Following Joanna's introductory talk, you will enjoy a simple lunch at the Michelin starred restaurant Outlaw's.

Joanna will then lead a demonstration on how to use a jeweller's eye piece, the loupe, for close inspection of gemstones. Your hands-on experience will be catered to your preferences. The choice of topics include: 'The Wonderful World of Gemstones' – that is, what to look out for in a gemstone, how to spot a counterfeit, and why these stones have become so valuable, 'The Age of Decadence and Discovery' – an exposition on Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewellery during the period between 1900-1935, and 'Jewellery as an Art Form from 1961-2014' – showcasing individual and unique jewellery of the modern era. Whichever you choose, Joanna's insightful knowledge is sure to enhance your own.
