Description

Explore the city of Oporto, venturing out from the comfort of a 5-star hotel. Recognisable by the traditional rabelos (Port vessels), the Vila Nova de Gaia municipality on the southern banks of the Douro is home to lodges and cellars in which Port wines are aged; and the most famous cellars are Taylor’s and Real Companhia Velha.

Founded in 1692 by English merchants, Taylor’s is one of the oldest Vintage Port producers, and sets the benchmark for Vintage Port; scoring 93 out of 100 for its Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2015.

Embark on an informative tour of its famous cellars and learn about four centuries of history at the House of Taylor’s. Finish your tour in the elegant Library Room for a tasting of three Port wines, including a Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) and a Tawny 10yo.

Real Companhia Velha (Royal Oporto), established in 1756 by royal charter, is famous for high-end quality; a Real Companhia Velha Port wine from the 1867 harvest is still bottled by special request and retails for around €1000 a bottle. Explore with a private guided tour of the centennial cellar, ageing warehouse and Vintage Museum. Finish with a tasting that includes the rare Tawny 10yo and Tawny 40yo Port wines.

Venturing down river into the breathtaking Douro Valley, you will spend two nights at Quinta da Pacheca’s Wine House Hotel. Winner of the ‘Accommodation Award’ in the Best of Wine Tourism 2015 world contest, the elegantly restored eighteenth century manor house is one of the Douro’s most luxurious hotels. Situated on a working vineyard, Quinta da Pacheca is devoted to providing an unforgettable gastronomic experience, which includes a D.O.C. and Port wine tastings during your stay.

In the heart of the Douro Valley you'll find Sandeman’s Quinta do Seixo Wine Centre. Established in 1790 by pioneering Scotsman George Sandeman, Sandeman’s was the first company to brand a cask of Port wine, and its infamous ‘Don’ logo is recognisable the world over.

Journey through the Quinta do Seixo winery with the Sandeman Don as your guide. To end, bring together the fantastic scenery and delicious cuisine with a picnic amongst the vineyard. Relax in the shade of fruit trees, with the river at your feet, and enjoy gourmet food paired with regional wines.
