Description

French-born and British-based, Marlene Huissoud is an experimental designer who graduated with an MA Material Futures (known as Textile Futures) at Central Saint Martins’ School of Art and Design in London in 2014. There Marlene developed the project From Insects; an exploration of insect materials from the common honeybee and the Indian silkworm.

Growing up in a family of beekeepers, Marlene was inspired by the symbiotic relationship between humans and insects, and was intrigued by the idea of using insects and their natural waste products to create handmade artefacts. The everyday honeybee collects propolis, a resinous mixture gathered from sap. The honeybee uses propolis to seal their hive, and Marlene uses it to create all manner of glass-like objects using a variety of glass manipulation techniques. Indian silkworms, on the other hand, create a hard cocoon that is discarded when they reach maturity. Marlene extracts the individual silk fibres that include a natural glue called Sericin. By activating the glue through heating the fibres and adding water, she creates a strong, paper-like material. Varnishing the paper with propolis creates a wooden, leather-like material that can be used for a variety of designs – including furniture or even clothing.

Marlene’s aim is to engage people with these unexpected and sustainable materials, and to provoke them to question their thoughts on product consumption. Her work has been featured in publications such as Dezeen, Viewpoint, Inhabitat, Treehugger, Frame Magazine, Icon and Design Milk, and at design exhibitions in Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Frankfurt and Dubai.

Marlene’s list of accolades is extensive, highlights include: Product Design Award DesignBlok Diploma selection 2014, being named as one of the UK’s Top 70 Rising Design Stars representing the future of British design by the Design Council, Selected Talent for Ambiente, and winning the Make Me! Award during Lodz Design Week 2015.
