“A right royal Indian banquet” Fay Maschler, The Evening Standard

Why we love it

Darbaar literally means ‘The Royal Courtyard’ of ancient India, and there is no better location to explore the regal cuisine of India in the UK today. Founded by former Cinnamon Club Chef Abdul Yaseen, the restaurant features a contemporary façade with a menu steeped in history. The award-winning chef has been recognised by the likes of Square Meal, and by the British BBQ championships. This experience presents Chef Yaseen’s playful take on the recipes of ancient India, in 21st century luxury.

Description

Chef Abdul Yaseen has been at the heart of London’s most successful Indian restaurant brand – Vivek Singh’s Cinnamon Club – for over a decade. Hailing from the Palatial capital of India, Jaipur, Chef Yaseen helped to build Modern British Indian dining and is now focussing his attention on his first solo restaurant. Winner of Square Meal’s Canapé Cup for three consecutive years and the British Barbecue Championships has shown his ability to translate his classical Indian training into more contemporary styles.

Darbaar is the chef’s playground to celebrate the shared dining experience inspired by the banquets of the Indian Royal Court while the decor offers a unique interpretation of the palaces of ancient India. The dining room is exposed to a bustling open kitchen centred around a charcoal robata grill, tandoor and wood-fired oven. From the 20-foot counter, watch the chefs in action as they prepare the banquet-style meals for which Darbaar was conceived.

The Darbaar philosophy is all about an ancient brand of excess. Each dish is served with a real sense of generosity; every dish designed to be shared on the table in signature Indian style. The dining experience at Darbaar begins in the bar. Whet your appetite with a complimentary signature cocktail, such as the ‘Mogli’s Temple’ – tropical fruits mixed through with Captain Morgan & home-made honey buttercream – or the ‘Mint Leaf’ – coconut & melon freshened up with mint & lime shaken with Havana Club.

The meal begins in earnest with a shared platter showcasing the chef’s mastery of wood and coal: tandoori paneer, chicken pasanda, salmon tikka and a lamb seekh kebab served to share at the table. This is followed by a succession of dishes and elegant desserts, in respect of India's love for sweet treats. This unique-to-Truly dining experience ends with Darbaar’s house-made ‘Naan Khatai’, enjoyed with India’s favourite tipple; a Royal spiced chai tea.
