Description

Shortly after Edulis opened in 2012, enRoute Magazine called it the "No.1 Best New Restaurant in Canada". It was the start of something special; with near-unprecedented praise following in the subsequent years. In 2014, the restaurant became only the second in the city to receive a four-star review from The Globe and Mail (the maximum rating possible); before a 2015 ranking from food writer Jacob Richler placed Edulis in the nation's top 10 dining destinations.

Meaning "edible" in Latin, Edulis combines the aesthetic of a classic European bistro with a passion for foraging the wilds of southern Ontario. Owners Michael Caballo and Tobey Nemeth describe their philosophy in a number of layers: "the pleasure of enjoying a gathering around the table to share authentic dishes and to be greeted like a friend; conviviality, feasting, celebrating the craft and tradition of cooking, honesty, and spectacular ingredients".

Key to the restaurant's success is Chef Michael's passion for wild foods, as well as his Spanish heritage. His menu continually evolves with the seasons, bringing creativity inspired by his years roaming Canada, Panama, France, Italy, and Spain.

Your experience starts with a glass of sparkling wine each, before you indulge in an eight-course carte blanche dinner based upon the ingredients of the moment. The eight course menu is exclusive to TRULY.

Reviews

  • A phenomenal dining experience

Absolutely outstanding dining experience. Would highly recommend to anyone.

    Excellent overall!

Excellent overall! Food was great, presented well and the staff was excellent.

  • Warm and cozy

Great food, great service, small but warm and cozy environment.
Long wait times between courses, but the quality of foods make up for it.
    Highly recommend.

    We will return

We have been to many restaurants over the years in that very location -- and they have all been excellent. The first time was 25 years ago when Lotus was there. That was Susur Lee's first restaurant in Toronto. Who could forget that!! Edulis is falling into that same great restaurant list. We will be back.

  • A rare toronto dining experience

Edulis is one of the few places I've been in Toronto that provides you with a dining experience. You get tastes of multiple smaller dishes, and all items that you get are a surprise before. The taste of the food is good. Can improve on presentation and getting the tastes even more sophisticated for the fine dining experience. Service is very good. Main downside is that it's really expensive.

    Delicious Dining Experience

Thank you Edulis, the food was delicious and creative, excellent attention to detail. I enjoyed the surprise factor - not knowing what each dish will be and learned very quickly that we were in excellent hands. Professional and knowledgeable service, accommodating with respect to food preferences / restrictions. House-made sodas are a tasty treat.

  • Recommended in spite of the over hype

Our experience here was not quite all I had hoped - the restaurant seems to have been a little overhyped by the critics. Portion sizes are very small and the restaurant is loud. But having said that, we did enjoy our evening and overall I would recommend.

Every Foodie should have this restaurant on their list

Overall, Edulis proved itself to be a restaurant that every foodie should put on their list. The flavors of the dishes were refreshing and imaginative though some one was more thrilled with the actual execution than the flavor production itself. The opening anchovy stuffed olive is a lazy welcome to what is to follow.

Dessert fell a little flat with parsnip cake (apply previous comment) but was well executed and an ambitious gesture to finish the meal. I was left wanting a little extra umph and flair given all the hype on this place, however, I will certainly return to try out future creations.

Service was great... Ambiance was nice. Solid date and special occasion spot.

  • Fantastic dining gift idea

Got this as a gift for hubby's birthday and had such a memorable evening. It's a strange sort of restaurant. Small with a lot of noise and bite-size courses. Everything was delicious though. Staff were attentive and knowledgable. We will go back.

Felt like I was in Spain

The food was revelatory. Transports you back to spain. The staff were charismatic, friendly, obliging. Excellent place for a cozy dinner.

  • Great Quality Tapas

We had an absolutely fantastic meal at Edulis. One of the best meals we've had anywhere in the world. Tapas style. Service was outstanding. Only downside was that it was expensive. But we felt for this quality of food, you have to pay to receive. Well done and we will take friends next time.

    Such Pretty Plating

The food is a smidgeon of art work; I felt so bad destroying its perfect placement each time a course came out. But then again, the flavours were incredible, so I didn't feel bad for long!
