Calling all coffee lovers – National Cappuccino Day is an annual event that falls on November 8th. It is the perfect excuse to celebrate with a frothy, warm espresso alternative and you can see cafes and brands join in on the fun too.
Here is the slight downside, however; it isn’t actually classed as a holiday here in the UK. We can join in on International Coffee Day on October 1st every year, and National Coffee Week UK. But as for the trusted cappuccino, there is no dedicated day yet for the UK.
The History of the Cappuccino
The cappuccino was invented in Italy, as the name suggests. It is made by adding hot, creamy frothed milk to an espresso, and follows the 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foam rule, giving it more foam than its closest rival, the latte.
The first modern espresso machine was invented in 1945 by Achille Gaggia, bringing the accessibility of cappuccinos into peoples homes. It was actually the first popularized form of espresso in Europe. As we have moved into the new century, cappuccinos have become a leading traditional coffee alternative.
Frothed milk is also perfectly accessible now too, thanks to dedicated milk frothier jugs which are easy to use at home – even without barista skills. Just add this milk to the coffee once poured, and you can even try practicing some latte art.
To make it a traditional cappuccino, add a sprinkle of chocolate powder on to the top (and serve with a biscuit or two).
Cappuccino In The UK
Cappuccinos are officially the second most popular form of coffee this side of the pond, just pipped to the post by latte. A poll of 2,000 adults in 2018 found the ten most popular blends, and lattes and cappuccinos were by far the biggest two, followed by the likes of the flat white, black Americano and filter.
There is an age split, however; young coffee connoisseurs under 45 favor a cappuccino over a latte, perhaps due to its creamier and frothier texture – and maybe that little dash of chocolate, too.
How To Celebrate National Cappuccino Day In The UK
While it may not be a national event officially, the power of social media and worldwide love of coffee means there is no reason why you can’t celebrate it anyway.
Use the hashtag #CappuccinoDay when sharing photos of your favorite hot drink, whether you have crafted it at home or treated yourself to a trip to the coffee shop.
Check events in your local coffee shop, too – some may offer money off a cappuccino on this day, and if they don’t, why not?! Show them this post and fight to give cappuccinos the love they deserve.
