Ultimate Guide to the Best Long Island Wineries You Must Visit

Summer is the perfect time to visit Long Island wineries. You can sample some damn fine wines, shop for fresh produce or pick your own, and stay over if you’ve had one tasting too many.

Long Island wineries are renowned for their innovative approaches to winemaking using old-world varietals and a smattering of new ones too. Many are environmentally friendly and follow organic principles in their vineyards.

Joseph T Macari Jr of Macari Winery is a prime example. Having studied biodynamic viticulture with visionary experts from California and Chile, Joseph Jr developed a complex composting system using Long Horn cattle to nourish the soil. This living soil produces healthy vines. His approach is ecological and holistic.

So, if you’re planning a trip to New York for business or pleasure, use our guide to explore Paumanok, the native American name for Long Island.

Everything you need to know about the best wineries in Long Island is right here, and we’ve even thrown in a few pet-friendly places too.

Most of the wineries are situated in the North Fork with a few on the South Fork or Hampton’s side of the peninsula. Bear in mind that many of the wineries only open in the late morning or around noon but we will specify opening times with specific listings.

Why Is Long Island Ideal For Winemaking?

With a cool maritime climate, the region produces moderate alcohol, intense aromatics, and crisp acidity helps to create world-class wines, also known as Long Island wines.

Like the classic wine area of Bordeaux in France, both forks of Long Island are surrounded by water. Vineyards next to the water are highly prized, making for a cool maritime climate with sandy soil ̶ naturally perfect for winemaking. The surrounding bodies of water of both the North and South forks temper or counterbalance both warm and cold fronts.

Long Island wineries are known for their superb reds including classic Bordeaux blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. But the winemakers have a few tricks up their sleeves and punters can find gorgeous Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc’s, Sparkling Wines and Chardonnays.

Now that we have the terroir out the way, are you ready for the best wineries in Long Island? Let’s dive right in!
