The Great Italian Truffle Hunt
The Langhe has a rich culinary scene, as the birthplace of the Slow Food Movement, host of some of Italy’s most revered wines and home of the highly prized White Truffle of Alba. Autumn time is certainly the finest time to visit, since truffle season runs from mid-September to late November.
With the opportunity to join local truffle hunters and their dogs, a spot of treasure hunting of your own is not out of the question. In addition to the magnificent cuisine, the views aren’t exactly bad either. Luxury country villas offer stunning views of the Langhe hills, with vineyards as far as the eye can see.
Sun Soaked Tenerife
For those who missed out on their fix of summer sunshine, all is not lost. Head to the greener north of Tenerife, away from the infamous resorts, where rural accommodation is charming and characterful.
Though they may not be typical of autumn, tropical forest walks, volcanic forays and white sandy beaches all make for an inviting trip.
Mount the Scottish Highlands
There has to be something romantic about the moody grey skies that engulf the sweeping green and orange highlands of Scotland at autumn time. Lochs reflect the dramatic clouds, while distilleries sit amid the hills, producing the whisky that reenlivens the soul in these colder climbs.
In Pitlochry, the Autumn Festival and Enchanted Forest run in October, while a walk around the town down to Loch Faskally provides beautiful autumnal vistas.
Take to Germany’s Romantic Road
Of all the roads in Germany, few rival the aptly named Romantische Strasse – the Romantic Road. The pastoral routes takes in quaint Bavarian villages and the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle.
There is no better time to experience it than in autumn time, when the hills pop with colour and character. Festivals and harvest fairs are common at this time of year, while the many walking trails in the area allow a magnificent stroll through the dramatically changing forests.
