How to Wet Shave

In an age of electric razors, the art of getting a close wet shave is sometimes seen as a little bit old fashioned. However, for those in the know, there are a lot of advantages to shaving like your grandad. A wet shave pampers your skin, reduces stubble and give you a healthy glow. Here’s an easy guide to perfecting how to wet shave.

1.      Start By Washing Your Face

This is an important step because it will cleanse your pores and remote potential irritation that is caused by dead skin and grit. Use a face wash that is suited to your skin and make sure to rinse it off completely.

2.      Apply Pre-Shave Oil

Dry your face gently and apply pre-shave oil. This will help to soften the skin and your facial hair so that it will be easier to shave.

3.      Place a Hot Towel on Your Face

Mix together two thirds boiling water and one third cold water in your sink or in a bowl, then soak a small towel for a few moments. Wring it out and apply it to your face for a few moments. If you have a large amount of facial hair or your beard is particularly thick you can hold the flannel on your skin for a few moments longer.

4.      Lather Up With Shave Foam

Use the badger brush to create a lather of shave foam on your face. Allow the brush to immerse in the warm water and then let the excess water drip from the brush before you use it. Take a small amount of shave cream and work it up into a creamy lather inside the shaving bowl. Then work the later into your face by using a firm circular motion.

5.      Shave With the Grain

The golden rule of the perfect wet shave is to always shave with the grain – never across the grain of hair growth. Move your razor across in the direction that the hair is pointed and you will avoid redness and irritation. Also, make sure that you don’t press too hard – this can cause an inconsistent shave and irritate your skin.

6.      Cool Your Face with a Towel

After you have finished shaving, cool your skin down with a cold towel for a few moments and then apply some soothing post-shave balm to soothe your skin.

Of course, if you don’t feel like doing it yourself you can also get the full wet shave experience at a spa or hairdresser. Gentleman’s Tonic offers a traditional wet shave and haircut that starts with a shampoo, conditioning and a soothing scalp massage. Alfred Dunhill is another classy London spot – founded in 1893 and renowned for being the pinnacle of men’s luxury grooming. The classic wet shave experience here includes D.R. Harris products and a complimentary drink upon arrival.
