2 Perfect Days: What to do in Prague

Home to Pilsner beer, absinthe and magical old-world castles, Prague has much to offer travellers. Natural beauty, architectural wonders, traditional feasts, folk dances and beautiful river cruises are just some of the things worth experience on your holiday. Close to the 600 year old mineral springs of Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne, a holiday in Prague also offers its share of spas and relaxation.

Day 1

Morning

Prague Castle:Take a guided walking tour of the impressive 9th-century Prague Castle, one of Europe’s largest medieval castles. The castle is a symbol of the country consisting of many palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles. From Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century, visitors can expect to be left mesmerised by the intricacy of architectural details.

Valdstejn Garden

Valdstejn Garden:Continue to another wonderland of Prague: the beautiful Valdstejn Garden. This is an Italian-style, terraced baroque garden. From here one can explore the city´s Lesser Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. See Kampa Island with its picturesque houses and admire the Lennon Wall, filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti.

Lunch and Afternoon

River Cruise:Enjoy a boat cruise along the Vltava River. Pass the historic Charles Bridge, one of the city’s most romantic sights. River cruises come with on-board commentary so one can learn about the incredible history and culture of Prague. Lunch will be served on board. Czech specialties like chicken noodle soup, roast meats, dumplings, fried cheese, pork schnitzel, beef goulash, crepes and apple strudel can be found on most cruise menus.

Old Town

Old Town:Take a walk through the bustling old town, right next to Charles Bridge. Here one can pass through the former Jewish Quarter, St. Nicholas Church, the Tyn Cathedral and the historical Old Town Hall. Be sure to watch out for the Town Halls’ world-famous astronomical clock. The clock contains of 12 apostles dating back to 1410 and strikes every 60 minutes.

Dinner and Evening

Traditional Feast & Dance:Enjoy a night out on the town Czech-style at a Prague folklore party. Most restaurants club live music and dance with three-course dinner, unlimited beer and wine. Czechs have always had a passion for dancing and singing. Full of vibrant energy, each dance is usually named after the town where it was first introduced.

Day 2

Morning

Day trip to Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne:No trip to Prague is completed without a visit to the world-renowned Czech spas, Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne. Discover the rich history of Karlovy Vary and its twelve springs. The spa has a 600 year tradition and is visited for health and relaxation. In years gone by, the spa was visited by rulers and many famous artists including Goethe, Chateaubriand, Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms and Dvorak. Then go on to Marianske Lazne, which was developed at the beginning of the 19th century in a valley where many mineral-rich healing streams spring from the ground. Visitors to both the spas are allowed to taste the different mineral waters and purchase souvenirs.

Lunch and Afternoon

Dumplings with Sauerkraut:Served with a cold pint of beer, this delicacy is a must-try when in Czech. There are many versions of these traditional Bohemian-Czech bread dumplings. The most popular ones come stuffed with meat, onions, cheese. There are many vendors selling this dish on the streets of Marianske Lazne spa. All are fresh, homemade, hygenic and worth trying for lunch. Be sure to try some of the contemporary, fruit-filled sweet dumplings with ice cream for dessert.

Dinner and Evening

Czech Beer Tasting:Simply hire a local guide and sample the best of Czech beers. Guides are trained to offer insightful introductions into the world of beer brewing in Prague. Explore the aromas and flavors of different types of beer from the Czech Republic – a country with one of the highest beer consumption rates in the world. One can easily expect to leave the tour an expert on pilsners, porters and everything in between. Most beer tours come inclusive of snacks and traditional Czech feasts.
