MORE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

Considered one of the most inventive European architects of his time, John Soane is most notably famous as the architect to the Bank of England and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Born the son of a bricklayer, the English architect specialising in Neo-Classical began as a modest country house architect, later rising to the top of his profession. In 1806 he was appointed as the professor of architecture at the Royal Academy, receiving his knighthood in 1831. Designed by the eccentric architect himself, his home in Lincoln’s Inn Fields houses an extraordinary personal collection of antiquities and architectural salvage. An avid art collector (boarding on hoarder), Sir John Soane extended his two neighbouring properties just to house his growing collection of priceless art. At his request, Soane’s house has been left untouched for nearly 180 years, a masterpiece of architecture and memorabilia. During your Highlights Tour, an expert guide will divulge the greatest artifacts of Soane’s 40 000-strong collection of worldly curiosities. Marvel at painting masterpieces by Canaletto, J.M.W. Turner and William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress. The crown jewel of the whole collection, feast your eyes on the 3,000 year-old sarcophagus of the Egyptian King Seti I, kept hidden in the basement. After a day exploring the top-secret bunker, journey a short distance to savour three-course lunch at Tuttons, you can expect to step directly into a Modern European paradise.
