Gift Description

American food writer James Beard once described oysters as "one of the supreme delights that nature has bestowed on man", adding that they "lead to discussion, to contemplation, and to sensual delight".

This broad range of emotion is typical of the legendary status oysters have carried throughout history. Once cultivated in Britain for export to ancient Rome, and later known for being the sole food served at Abraham Lincoln's dinner parties, there is no doubt that these molluscs come with great acclaim.

Originating in Portuguese waters and now produced across Britain and Europe, rock oysters have a taste and texture to savour. Unlike native oysters, rock oysters aren't seasonal, meaning they can be enjoyed year-round.

Describing the flavours carried within these shells is no simple task. French poet Léon-Paul Fargue likened the initial salty taste to "kissing the sea on the lips", with the subtleties that then linger on afterwards differing from oyster to oyster.

A glass of champagne compliments this beautifully. Chatting over the unique finishes of the oysters and sipping on a glass of Moet is an experience that is exhilarating and relaxing in equal measure.

Sat at the bar in one of Mark Hix's London restaurants, you can be assured of a first-class experience. Hix is one of the capital's best-known restaurateurs, cookbook authors and celebrity chefs - having appeared on BBC television series Great British Menu.

This experience can be enjoyed at either HIX Soho (winner of London's Time Out Award for Best New Restaurant in 2010) or HIX Oyster & Chop House, hidden away from the City's hustle-and-bustle on a side street in Farringdon.

Selection of six oysters will include two to three different types, which may include:
  • Cumbrae rock oysters (North Ayrshire, West Scotland)
  • Jersey rock oysters (Jersey, Channel Islands)
  • Lindisfarne rock oysters (Northumberland, North East England)

We went late on a Friday night, the atmosphere was cool and calm, relaxed and rather charming. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu and the Oysters, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience throughout.
